Who doesn’t love melons? To me, melons are the quintessential summer time treat, even more so than a snowball or ice cream. I mean, you can get ice cream any time of the year and it will taste basically the same. Not so for melons.
We’re a house divided. Men vs Women. Boys vs Girls. Mom vs everyone else in the house.
I adore watermelon. This goes back to gardening with my grandfather when I was a little kid. We would look forward to cutting that juicy melon open and just sitting out on the steps out back, sucking it up. Redd and the boys prefer the cantaloupe. Plain jane, sherbert orange cantaloupe.
Ok, I shouldn’t give cantaloupe such a hard time. It comes ripe faster than watermelons. I get a bit of a taste for melons early on in June rather than having to wait till the end of June or Heaven forbid, early July for those ripe juicy watermelons. Cantaloupes have all their seeds in the center so it’s much easier to clean and eat. They’re pretty versatile for smoothies or salads or just on their own as a cooling treat. Yes, you can make watermelon gazpacho or watermelon salsa or watermelon mojitos, but why bother when watermelon is just so darn delicious straight up?
I was extremely happy today when I went to the farmer’s market. Watermelons were in. I bought the “small” one, plus another cantaloupe for the guys and came home. I cut the cantaloupe into wedges and then sliced into the watermelon. To be honest, this one probably could have gone another week before harvest. It’s rind was a bit thick, but it’s still delicious. I’ve got two containers of watermelon chilling in the fridge for a later afternoon snack. And probably an early evening snack. And if I stay up, a late night snack too.
You can keep nasty cantaloupe, precious, I’ll keep watermelon. What’s your favorite melon?

Cantaloupe, or is it muskmelon? My mom was a single parent and even back then (50 years ago!) melons weren’t cheap. So…she would buy 1 muskmelon and cut it in 6 pieces and her and my younger sis and myself would inhale it. Maybe cause it was so precious back then, it is my favorite now? But watermelon is a close second!

I think it’s officially a “muskmelon”, but we’ve always called it cantaloupe. Muskmelon is a weird name too, it doesn’t taste musky.

Watermelon hands down. Sprinkled with salt. Always with salt. I can eat cantelope that way also but it isn’t the same.

Christy, are you sure you don’t live in Louisiana? I thought only Cajuns sprinkled salt on their melons. Hubs is from MS and he thinks it’s weird we put salt on our cantaloupes. I told him it makes it sweeter.

No, not from Louisiana – Indiana. Don’t know how many other Hoosiers salt their melon, but we do in MY family!

I’m still learning to like melon of any sort…believe it or not! Most people don’t, LOL! Everybody else in the house prefer watermelon, though…the other melons tagging along a little ways behind… Thanks so much for submitting this post to Two for Tuesdays this week =)

Blasphemy LOL!! I still can’t figure out why my kids don’t like watermelon. I think it’s all the seeds and the texture.

Hi momma hen! I have a confession to make. I could live on melon and melon alone all summer long I love it that much, and watermelon is my fav! But right now, the only melons in the store are the seedless ones and not sure they are REAL FOOD. I will wait for some to appear at the local market and stick to cantaloupes. Thanks for sharing the real food love on the two for tuesday recipe blog hop!

Alex, what’s so tricky is sometimes the grocery store will put a sign that says “local melons”. I’ll think it the guy I buy from @ the market, but when I look very close, it’s actually a farmer in TX, granted a farmer and not a corporation, but it’s still so tricky. It’s much easier to just buy at the market where I can talk face to face.

I adore watermelon! It always came out around my birthday each year and it was always what I wanted on my birthday even more than cake – I’m pretty sure there were birthdays when I ate a whole watermelon by myself. My husband is a big fan of cantaloupe and other melons though so sounds like we have a similar family dynamic when it comes to melons. Thanks so much for sharing this post on our Two for Tuesday blog hop!

Bethany, I can relate about birthday food! We had this big discussion last night @ the dinner table about cantaloupe vs watermelon AGAIN LOL. It’s all in good fun.
