Are you looking for a way to give more of yourself? I discovered this blog thru Money Saving Mom. Gleaning the Harvest is a donation site set up for widows and orphans. As it says in it’s banner, In respect of James 1:27 where we should support widows and orphans in love of the Lord.
Personally, I don’t know any orphans. Nor widows. I used to work with a widow, but that’s the thing….I worked with her. In today’s day, if a woman loses her husband, she can easily get a job (in theory, at least). I don’t find today’s society like the society of Jesus’ time concerning women and working.
I’m guessing if a widow has small children at home, she may be less than willing to get a job outside of the home. I’m also guessing life insurance (if they have any) doesn’t go very far after paying off the mortgage and other debt. Personally, if something were to happen to Redd (God forbid!), I would have enough life insurance to pay off the house and a bit left over. I’d probably be able to live for a couple of years without going to work. I’m lucky though, my parents live here in town and their house is empty, big, and paid in full.
My dad would want us to move in with them. See, this is what happened to him as a small boy. His father died when he was two. He and he mother lived in “town”. His grandfather (my grandmother’s father) insisted that my dad and his mother move back to the “country” and live with them (my great grandfather and spinster aunt). My grandmother agreed, if he agreed to install indoor plumbing. Done and done, my dad moved back to the country. He was raised under the fathership of his grandfather. If he wouldn’t have had that male presence in his life, I know he would have turned out much differently than he is now. This is why I know my dad would insist that the boys and I move home with them. Not everyone is as lucky as I am in the presence of widowhood.
Gleaning the Harvest has issued a challenge in May thru June….pick a family featured on their website and give just $3.00 from your Paypal account. I figured if I could buy a stupid video game for my son last night for 3.26 with my Paypal funds, then I could easily give 3.00 towards a fatherless family.
Will you join me in this challenge?
